The petition was triggered by fans getting upset over the decision in season eight to kill off Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs), son of main character Rick Grimes.
The petition has already amassed 41,637 signatures of its 50,000 goal, and points to rumours that Riggs was treated unfairly by the show.
The description reads: “The entire show has been a lead up to showing Carl become the leader that his father is, maybe one day taking on the mantle himself.”
The petition also claims that Riggs considered postponing his college education and had been promised a further three years on the show by Gimple.
They point to a Facebook post written then deleted by Riggs’ father which claimed his son was fired two weeks before his birthday.
“Gimple gave no explination as to why Chandler was killed off other than that it was because of ‘the story,’ and that it had nothing to do with personal issues but many speculate that the claim is false,” the petition continues.
“This petition is meant to bring AMC TV into the spotlight and fire The Walking Dead showrunner Scott Gimple for his actions and unfair treatment of actor Chandler Riggs.”
They also point out that Carl Grimes is still a leading and pivotal character in the comic book series.
Meanwhile, season eight saw the show’s viewing figures slump, drawing below eight million US viewers for the first time in over five years.
