NME Festival blog: Taraji P. Henson says Jussie Smollett will return to ‘Empire’

The actor was dropped from the last episodes of season 5 over claims he staged a racist and homophobic attack

Jussie Smollett will return to Empire for its next season, according to his co-star Taraji P. Henson.

The actor was removed from the final episodes of season 5 after he was accused of staging a racist and homophobic attack on himself. He denied the claims and the charges against him were dropped last month.

During an appearance on The View, Henson discussed the rumours that he would be permanently replaced in the show. “I talk to Jussie all the time, he’s doing well,” she said. “Yeah, we’re all doing well, the show is doing well. We’re on hiatus right now, the writers are trying to figure out what the next season is going to look like, what our storyline is going to be.”

When asked if Smollett would be returning as Jamal, the son of her character Cookie, Henson replied: “Yes, I haven’t heard anything else.”

Meanwhile, it was reported earlier today that the city of Chicago is intending to sue Smollett after he missed a deadline to pay the costs associated with the investigation into the attack on him. After the charges were dropped against him, he was ordered to pay $130,000 (£99,500) to cover the costs.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the city said: “Mr Smollett has refused to reimburse the city Of Chicago for the cost of police overtime spent investigating his false police report on 29 January 2019.

“The law department is now drafting a civil complaint that will be filed in the Circuit Court Of Cook County. Once it is filed, the law department will send a courtesy copy of the complaint to Mr Smollett’s LA-based legal team.”
