NME Festival blog: Richard E Grant robbed at cash machine in South Africa

He was on holiday at the time.

Richard E Grant has been robbed while on holiday with his family in South Africa.

The ‘Withnail and I’ actor was mugged at a cash machine in Cape Town, which – according to Business Tech – had the highest crime rate in the country for the year 2016/17, with 15,952 reported crimes in that period.

Tweeting about the incident, he said: ‘Feel like a right mug having been mugged at an ATM in Cape Town. Grrrrrrrrrrrr.’

However, the actor appeared to be fine, later tweeting another picture from his holiday, relaxing on the beach with his daughter, Olivia Grant.

Grant was born in South Africa’s Mbabane – now part of Swaziland, an independent country which borders with South Africa. It gained independence in 1968.

Fans flocked to comfort the actor after his ordeal.

Grant stars alongside ‘Ghostbusters” Melissa McCarthy in upcoming film ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’, due in cinemas October 2018.

The film is a biographical comedy drama, based on Lee Israel’s memoir of the same name.

This year, he also acted in action comedy, ‘The Hitman’s Bodygaurd’ and sci-fi drama, ‘Logan’.

The actor also has his own unisex perfume line, Jack Perfume, which he launched in 2014.
