NME Festival blog: Olly Murs clashes with Piers Morgan over London “gun shots” tweet confusion

Morgan has accused Murs of causing “needless panic by tweeting false information”

Olly Murs has clashed with Piers Morgan online over tweets the singer posted during confusion surrounding reports of an incident in London on Friday night (November 24).

Despite initial reports of gunfire on central London’s Oxford Street, it has been announced that there has been no evidence found of any shots being fired and armed police have been stood down.

Singer Murs took to Twitter during the confusion, revealing that he was in the nearby Selfridges store at the time and suggesting that there had been gun shots. “Really not sure what’s happened! I’m in the back office… but people screaming and running towards exits!” he tweeted.

“Evacuating store now!!! Fuck heart is pounding,” Murs added in an additional tweet, before later tweeting: “Being told no shots in Selfridges! Have no idea the whole store went crazy!”

“Despite what actually happened I’m so glad it was nothing serious and I hope everyone got home safely,” he later added.

As more details emerged, Piers Morgan tweeted at Murs: “Stop tweeting mate… Nothing happened.” He later accused the singer of causing “needless panic by tweeting false information”. Piers added: “When you have millions of followers be very careful what you tweet.”

In his defence, Murs said: “It’s easy to say now it was nothing but in a state of shock and panic I was trying to make people aware of what was happening,” adding: “If you was there you’d have understood mate.”

Despite describing Murs as a “good guy”, Morgan went on to say: “Leave it to the police next time. It’s not your place to tell people to evacuate or say (wrongly) that shots were fired. You could have put people in more danger.”
