NME Festival blog: Mariah Carey says she feels ‘uplifted’ and ‘inspired’ after opening up about bipolar diagnosis

Mariah Carey has said she feels “uplifted” and “inspired” since opening up about her diagnosis with bipolar.

The star spoke about being diagnosed with the condition for the first time earlier this week, revealing she had been suffering from bipolar II since 2001.

“Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me,” she told People. “It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love — writing songs and making music.”

She added that she had previously thought it to be a “severe sleep disorder” until she saw a doctor about it.

In a new post on Instagram, the star shared an update with fans, writing: “I’ve been hard at work, feeling inspired by each of your stories and uplifted by your overwhelming support. Let’s continue to encourage each other on our journeys.”

In the interview, Carey had said she was speaking out about her battle with the illness in the hopes of getting “to a place where stigma is lifted from people going through anything alone”. “It can be incredibly isolating. It does not have to define you and I refuse to allow it to define me or control me,” she said.
