NME Festival blog: Mac DeMarco teases more new music, but says he “doesn’t know what it’ll be like”

Mac DeMarco has spoken about new music, saying that he’s “always writing and recording”.

DeMarco’s latest album ‘This Old Dog’ was released in May 2017.

This week has seen DeMarco unveil two new songs, called ‘She’s My Sweet’ and ‘Fuck The Toronto Raptors’. He claimed the songs were “recorded on the red carpet at the Met Gala”. They followed the slow jam of new track ‘Eternally 12′, an instrumental collaboration with Melanie Faye.

Last December, he live-streamed 26 minutes of unheard material. Then, this April, DeMarco shared a strange four-minute clip of a cat named Pickles eating, soundtracked by some jazzy music.

Speaking to Matt Wilkinson on Beats 1, DeMarco has confirmed that there’ll be more new music “soon” despite “taking it a little breezy” at the moment.

“I’m always writing and recording little things all over the place – nothing cohesive like a project or anything but yeah it’s my hobby,” DeMarco explained.

“I’ll wake up, head to the garage and just toot around for most of the day…I mean I always have some songs – I don’t really know if they’d make an album.”

“I’m just happy to write stuff and in the past it was always like, ‘I’ve got a month between this year of touring and next year of touring so I’m going to make an album right now!’. I could still schedule my tours like that still but I think then I’d be in worse repair then I already am!”

“I’m just taking it a little breezy. I’ll have music soon, I don’t know what it’ll be like.”

DeMarco also discussed working with Melanie Faye (“one of the best guitar players I’ve ever played with”), jamming with the likes of The Internet and Anderson. Paak in Los Angeles (“There are a lot of good people that know how to play out here!”).

He went on to reveal that he almost didn’t release his last album ‘This Old Dog’, saying: “That record for me, a lot of it was written a year before it came out so I figured I’d already breathed with it. When I first wrote those songs I was like ‘Hell no am I putting these out!’ A lot of the stuff on that was kinda like my diary more than it had been before and I didn’t really know if people wanted to hear this crap. But then I came to terms with it and was like, this is important for me to do.”

Meanwhile, Mac DeMarco has been confirmed to return to Europe to perform at Pitchfork Paris music festival from 1-3 November 2018 in the French capital.

Also on the bill are Bon Iver, Fever Ray, The Voidz, Blood Orange, Chvrches, Dream Wife, DJ Koze Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks and more.
