NME Festival blog: Listen to a new version of David Bowie’s ‘Bang Bang’ cover

Already an instant classic…

A new, re-worked version of David Bowie’s ‘Bang Bang’ has been revealed.

Premiering on Iggy Pop’s BBC Radio 6 show, ‘Iggy Confidential’, the version can be heard here, at the 1:38:30 mark. You can also watch a video comparing the old and new version here:

The original version of ‘Bang Bang’ appeared in 1981 on Iggy Pop’s album, ‘Party’. Bowie later covered it the 1987 album, ‘Never Let Me Down.’

The new version will appear on the upcoming David Bowie box set, ‘Loving the Alien’ which features a new production of ‘Never Let Me Down’ by Mario McNulty, together with string arrangements by Nico Muhly. There is also a guest appearance from Laurie Anderson on the set.

Recently, a new insight into Bowie’s career in the 1980’s was revealed in a detailed new Uncut feature which focussed on Bowie’s 80’s reinvention. The article included a series of new interviews and anecdotes from the late star’s colleagues and friends.

Nile Rogers, who co-produced ‘Let’s Dance’, spoke about Bowie’s impact in the 1980’s for the article. He said: “Diehard Bowie fans act like those records of the ’70’s – Ziggy Stardust, Pin Ups and the others – were these massive records, but they weren’t.”

He added: “They were interesting, wonderful, theatrical rock’n’roll records. They were great artistic products, but they weren’t ‘Let’s Dance’. We’ve got to be honest, the numbers tell the story.”
