NME Festival blog: “I’d say anything” – Liam Gallagher says he can’t play live without an autocue

Liam Gallagher has revealed that he is unable to perform live without the assistance of an autocue – admitting that he’d “say anything” if instructed to do so.

The former Oasis turned solo star was appearing on  In The Third Person – the new podcast from The Streets‘ Mike Skinner and Murkage Dave. At one point during the interview, Skinner and Gallagher discuss the problems facing ageing musicians.

“Oh, I do need autocue. I do have autocue,” said Gallagher. “Fucking too right… I mean, I’d say anything, whatever they put on there. If they put fucking fish and chips and fucking, you know, I’d sing that as well.

“It’s terrible, leaving my fucking shit in other people’s hands, but yeah, I need the autocue, man.”

Gallagher made headlines again earlier this week when he hit out at brother Noel’s plans to start recording two albums simultaneously, but one would be more ‘traditional’.

“Traditional? Thought you don’t do traditional any more,” Liam replied. “What happened to your cosmic pop journey? Shit it, have we?”

Meanwhile, last week saw Gallagher reveal the support acts for his upcoming headline show at London’s Finsbury Park. Wolf Alice, DMA’S, Dream Wife, The Sherlocks, Twisted Wheel, Trampolene and many more will be joining him at his huge outdoor show in the capital on Friday June 29.

“I can’t speak for everyone, but I think the general consensus is it’s just fucking mega really, innit,” Wolf Alice bassist Ellis told NME. “What’s better than getting an offer to support Liam Gallagher? It’s just really, really cool and I’m so proud to eventually say I supported Liam Gallagher and fingers crossed nothing goes wrong.”

He continued: “I never dreamt of supporting Oasis or any of those artists. That whole realm seems almost fictitious cos it was on such a big scale, do you know what I mean? Because I’m from a bit of a different generation as well, they took on a different form. They were untouchable.”
