NME Festival blog: Elizabeth Banks will star in a new movie based on MTV’s 1986 “Win a Date With Prince” contest

She’ll tell the true-life story of Lisa Barber

Elizabeth Banks will star in a new film that’s based on MTV’s 1986 “Win a Date With Prince” contest.

‘Queen for a Day’ is based on the true-life story of young motel chambermaid Lisa Barber, who won a date with Prince thanks to MTV’s competition.

The contest also treated Barber to a Prince concert and film screening in her hometown. You can see Prince with Lisa Barber in the video below.

The plot for the film comes from Chris Lee’s 2017 story for the Daily Beast, “When Prince Made a Chambermaid His Queen For a Day,” which details how, behind the scenes of the content, “coke-fueled chaos reigned.”

Deadline reports that Prince will not be a character in the film. According to a synoposis, “the movie will focus on the herculean effort that went into organizing an event that brought the 5’3″ purple-clad rock icon to a small cowboy town and established his date as a reluctant media sensation.”

Meanwhile, an unreleased Prince song will feature on the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s ‘BlacKkKlansman’. Lee has secured the use of unreleased Prince track ‘Mary Don’t You Weep’,which plays during the film’s end credits.

“I knew that I needed an end-credits song,” the Malcolm X director told Rolling Stone. “I’ve become very close with Troy Carter, one of the executives at Spotify [and a Prince estate advisor].

“So I invited Troy to a private screening. And after, he said, ‘Spike, I got the song.’ And that was ‘Mary Don’t You Weep,’ which had been recorded on cassette in the mid-80s.”

He added: “Prince wanted me to have that song, I don’t care what nobody says.My brother Prince wanted me to have that song. For this film.

“There’s no other explanation to me. This cassette is in the back of the vaults. In Paisley Park. And all of a sudden, out of nowhere, it’s discovered? Nah-ah. That ain’t an accident.”
