NME Festival blog: Ed Sheeran reveals surprise new sound for new album (which he doesn’t want you to buy)

Ed Sheeran has revealed that his new album is going to be ‘lo-fi’,  sound like Bruce Springsteen, and be the ‘lowest-selling’ of his career.

As he prepares the victory lap for his massive-selling third album ‘÷‘ (having recently revealed a chart-topping new single with Beyonce), Sheeran told The Times of how he had been inspired by The Boss’ 1982 classic ‘Nebraska’.

“My plan is a lo-fi album that will be my lowest-selling, but most loved,” Sheeran said “I only heard Springsteen recently. I was with Kit [Harington] from Game Of Thrones. We had a night out in New York, got back to his hotel to drink more, and he played ‘Atlantic City’.

“Then, when I heard Nebraska…”

Meanwhile, Sheeran also revealed that while he wouldn’t describe himself as ‘political’, he did speak of his admiration for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

“I love Corbyn. I love everything Corbyn is about. And I feel people thought that, because I didn’t put myself behind him, I wasn’t a Corbyn supporter”, said Sheeran. “If you knew me as a person, and listened to my music, you would be able to make a pretty educated guess that he would be the kind of person I really dig.”

He added: “He cares about other people. He cares about all classes, races and generations, and that’s how I was brought up – we need more people that care about everyone.”
