Gillian Anderson has appeared to diss her X-Files exit -after fans slammed the twist that saw Scully leave the show this season.
The cult sci-fi show – which first aired from 1993 to 2002 – returned for a 10th season in 2016. It’s 11th series premiered in January, coming to an end earlier this week.
With Anderson confirming that the 11th outing would be her “last”, Scully was written out in the latest episode.
During the latest instalment, it was revealed that the Cigarette Smoking Man was the father of William – not Mulder. The Smoking Man shot William while pretending to be Mulder, before the actual Mulder shot him and his son is revealed to be alive. It also turned out that Scully is pregnant.
Following the episode’s airing, Anderson tweeted a GIF of an un-impressed Scully with the caption: “Oh boy oh boy do I ever hear you” – echoing fans disappointment with the twists and turns.
Chris Carter – the show’s creator previously said the finale was “one of the most interesting cliffhangers that the show has ever had” and that fans would either “love me or hate me”.
Anderson had explained her reasons for quitting the show earlier this year.
“It’s time for me to hang up Scully’s hat. It just is,” she said. “I arrived at the decision before we did [season 10], but I was really curious. I felt that the previous six [episodes] was going to be it. It was dipping our toe back in again… and getting to play these wonderful characters again.”
