NME Festival blog: Chris Hemsworth tipped for ‘Men in Black’ reboot

Chris Hemsworth has been linked to Sony Pictures’ upcoming 2019 reboot of the Men In Black franchise.

The original trilogy began in 1997, and starred Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as agents J and K, members of a secret Government organisation tasked with tracking down criminal alien life. The original filmed spawned two sequels, in 2002 and 2012 respectively.

Now, Sony are developing a reboot of the franchise, with F. Gary Gray on board to direct a June 2019 film. As The Hollywood Reporter state, Chris Hemsworth is apparently eyeing a starring role in the new series, with the Thor star set to play a new character in the Men In Black universe. Neither Smith nor Jones have been approached to reprise their roles from the original trilogy.

Last year, Chris Hemsworth revealed that he nearly turned down the chance to play Thor in the Marvel film franchise.

The actor was first seen as the character in 2011’s Thor and has been ever-present in the series since.

However, when he was first approached to take up the part of the God of Thunder in 2009, he nearly passed. In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Hemsworth said: “I was crossing the road in Vancouver… And I remember the exact moment getting a call from my lawyer and my manager saying, ‘You got the offer’. And then kind of going, ‘Oh wow, cool. So what is it?’

“‘It’s a superhero thing and it’s a six-picture deal.’ And we were like, ‘That’s a lot of films to sign up for. We should pass on this.’”
