NME Festival blog: Check out these photos of Daisy Ridley as Ophelia in new “empowered” Hamlet reimagining
Star Wars‘ Daisy Ridley is set to star in Ophelia, a new, “empowered” reimagining of Shakespeare’s famous heroine from Hamlet. Check out the first photos of Ridley as Ophelia below.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the movie “follows its lowborn protagonist as she becomes the most trusted lady-in-waiting for Gertrude and strikes up a relationship with her son, Hamlet (George MacKay). Along the way, Ophelia gets caught up in the court’s deadliest betrayals and secrets, all while trying to find her own path”.
It’s an adaptation of Lisa Klein’s novel of the same name and will be directed by Claire McCarthy, starring Naomi Watts as Hamlet’s mother Queen Gertrude.
Watts said that “often how women have been portrayed in storytelling” is “as the damsel in the distress,” adding: “If their mind is powerful, it must be madness. And now there’s this shift that’s taking place, and that’s reflected in this storytelling.”
“We wanted [Ophelia] to feel a lot more empowered and a lot more visceral than the original Ophelia, who is really only in a handful of scenes,” director McCarthy said.
Watts added: “There’s real currency in the fact that Ophelia was the victim, and now she’s been recast as the hero.”

Ophelia premieres at Sundance Film Festival later this month (January 22).
