NME Festival blog: Check out Florence + The Machine’s colourful new video for ‘Big God’

The latest track from the new album was premiered earlier today

Florence + The Machine have shared their powerful new song and video for ‘Big God’. Check it out below.

The group, led by Florence Welch, are set to release their new album ‘High As Hope’ later this month. It follows 2016’s’ ‘How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful‘.

‘Big God’ will be the third studio recording to be shared from ‘High As Hope’, which is due out on June 29. It was co-written by Jamie xx and features Kamasi Washington on tenor saxophone. The new video meanwhile was choreographed by Akram Khan and Florence, and directed by Autumn De Wilde.

“‘Big God’ was written about that feeling when someone has not replied to your text, the modern phenomenon of ‘ghosting’ which is one of my favourite words but not my favourite feeling,” said Florence of the track. “I was describing it to someone and they said to me ‘you need a big god’, as if the need in me were so cavernous it would take something enormous to fill it. Probably something bigger than a text message. “

She continued: “It’s always been a very physical song, I saw a dance piece  in my head as I was writing it, so to co choreograph something with Akram Khan was a huge honour. Autumn de Wilde fully understood what I was trying to do. The power of the desire within the void. Left with yourself to rage and wonder. And really it is yourself you are raging against. Not the ghost.”

Khan meanwhile, added: “For me, this encounter with Florence and her powerful song somehow navigated itself towards the element – water. But the direction of the dance also became a resistance to all things that wish to oppress, a sort of protest dance and yet a celebratory one towards a new found freedom.”

The track follows the previously-released ‘Hunger’ and ‘Sky Full Of Song‘. Florence + The Machine also previewed two more new tracks at a recent show in Halifax in the form of ‘100 Years’ and ‘Patricia’.

Meanwhile, the group is set to head out on a headline tour of UK arenas later this year. Tickets are available to purchase here.

Florence + The Machine will play:

Leeds, First Direct Arena (November 15)
Birmingham, Genting Arena (16)

Glasgow, The SSE Hydro (17)
London, The O2 (21)
Manchester, Manchester Arena (23)
Brighton, Brighton Centre (25)
Cardiff, Motorpoint Arena (26)

Welch recently discussed the new record on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show, explaining how she stopped drinking to work on it. “It’s interesting because I think I never knew how to come down after a tour before, so I would just go on a massive bender,” she said. “And I wasn’t doing that, so I just went straight back into the studio.”
