NME Festival blog: ‘Catwoman’ writer calls it a “shit movie” and admits he hasn’t even watched it in full

One of the writers of Catwoman has dismissed his own film, describing it as “shit” and admitting that he has never actually seen all of it.

The 2004 superhero movie, based on the DC Comics character of the same name, starred Halle Berry in its lead role.

Upon its release, the film was panned by critics. It holds a lowly 9% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

This week, conservative commentator D.C McAllister commented on the success of Marvel’s Black Panther by tweeting: “Michelle Obama says it’s about time black kids have a superhero that reflects who they are. Why didn’t we hear this when Halle Berry as Catwoman was released years ago?”

Describing McAllister’s tweet as a “bad take” and saying that she should “feel shame”, Catwoman writer John Rogers wrote in response: “As one of the credited writers of CATWOMAN, I believe I have the authority to say: because it was a shit movie dumped by the studio at the end of a style cycle, and had zero cultural relevance either in front of or behind the camera.”

Rogers, who also worked on Transformers, added: “Also full disclosure: I’ve never watched the movie all the way through in one sitting. I skipped premiere night… And they’d fired me anyway for, y’know, snark.”

Black Panther, meanwhile, has received rave reviews and smashed box office recordsNME dubbed the film ‘the best Marvel movie yet’ in our review.
