NME Festival blog: Carrie Brownstein’s Sleater-Kinney memoir is to become a TV show

Sleater-Kinney guitarist Carrie Brownstein’s memoir is set to be turned into a half-hour TV show, according to reports.

‘Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl’ was released back in 2015, documenting Brownstein’s life in the pioneering rock band, and the reality of a life in the music business.

Now, Hollywood Reporter state that the book is being made into a half-hour TV show pilot, titled Search And Destroy and centred around “a young woman, a band and a community learning how to be unafraid of their own noise.”

The show is set to air on streaming service Hulu, and comes following numerous awards for Brownstein’s work on Portlandia.

The musician and Portlandia star previously spoke to NME about the book, confirming that “it pretty much ends with Sleater-Kinney going on hiatus, and a little bit of leading on from that. But it doesn’t even really go onto Portlandia“.

A press release for the book says it is “an intimate and revealing narrative of her escape from a turbulent family life into a world where music was the means toward self-invention, community and rescue. Along the way, Brownstein chronicles the excitement and contradictions within the era’s flourishing and fiercely independent music subculture, including experiences that sowed the seeds for the observational satire of the popular television series Portlandia years later”.
