NME Festival blog: Keanu Reeves discusses how he got mystery ‘Toy Story 4’ role

The toys are back in town in June 2019

Keanu Reeves has shared details on how he was given his part in the upcoming Toy Story movie.

The fourth instalment in the highly-successful Disney/Pixar franchise is due to hit cinema screens on June 21, 2019. Two trailers were unveiled last month, with one clip featuring new characters who are voiced by comedian double act Key & Peele.

After promising fans that the film will “really surprise you”, actor Tim Allen – who portrays Buzz Lightyear – teased that Reeves “has got a great part” in Toy Story 4.

Now, The Matrix actor has discussed the process of landing the role – revealing that he was allowed to creatively shape the character himself.

“I got a call which was really cool out the blue from the lovely people at Pixar and the creators of this number, this edition, or continuation of the story,” Reeves told Collider. “They pitched the character to me and then we spoke and they allowed me to kind of riff on it.”

The actor said that he has completed four recording sessions for the film at present.

The trailer for Toy Story 4 came with a brief synopsis of the movie. “Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie,” it reads. “But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called ‘Forky’ to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy.”

With the film expected to be the final outing for Woody and the gang, Tom Hanks – who voices the cowboy protagonist – recently opened up about his last recording sessions.

NME Festival blog: It’s Beatlemania at The O2 as Ringo Starr is spotted in the crowd for Paul McCartney’s London show

Members of The Who and The Rolling Stones are also getting involved…

Ringo Starr has caused quite the stir amongst Beatles fans at Paul McCartney‘s London gig tonight, with the legendary musician being spotted by fans in the crowd.

McCartney is currently performing at London’s O2 Arena (December 16) in support of his latest record, ‘Egypt Station‘. The huge show follows recent performances in Liverpool and Glasgow.

Ahead of the Beatles icon taking to the stage, those in attendance reported a big commotion after McCartney’s former bandmate and pal Ringo was seen at the venue. Many were said to be snapping images of stickman Starr as they waited for the show to begin.

Journalist Howell Davies tweeted a photo of the drummer surrounded by excited fans, with the caption: ‏“Mini Beatles reunion at The O2 tonight as Ringo Starr has turned up to watch Paul McCartney. Incredible.” See that image below.

Proving to be an evening jam-packed with Rock ‘n’ Roll royalty, a follow-up post claimed that The Who‘s Roger Daltrey and The Rolling Stones‘ Ronnie Wood are also present.

McCartney’s fashion designer daughter Stella later took to Instagram to post an image of herself with Macca, Starr, Wood, and actor Emma Thompson. “Kick ass tonight dad,” she captioned the photo.

Reviewing Paul McCartney’s recent homecoming show earlier this week, NME‘s Gary Ryan said that the concert was “another example, surely, of Macca refusing to bow to the march of time”.

“In an interview to promote ‘Egypt Station’, he said he’d once ingested so many drugs, he saw the face of God. Judging by tonight’s transcendent gig, perhaps he just looked in the mirror.”

Meanwhile, it was reported earlier this week that police have launched an investigation after a break-in at McCartney’s London home.

HQ Trivia and Vine co-founder Colin Kroll has died at the age of 35, it is being reported.

Kroll founded the video social media site Vine in June 2012, along with Rus Yusupov and Dom Hofmann. The platform was bought by Twitter four months later.

Kroll and Yusupov then founded the successful smartphone quiz app HQ Trivia, taking the CEO role from Yusupov in September.

HQ Trivia was in the top 10 most downloaded free iPhone games in January, after being launched in summer 2017.

NME Festival blog: ‘Youtube Rewind 2018’ set to become Youtube’s most disliked video ever

Taking the title from Justin Bieber

YouTube’s Rewind 2018 video is set to become the streaming service’s most disliked ever.

The annual round-ups have featured on the site since 2010, referencing the cultural and musical moments that defined the year.

In 2018’s version, uploaded on December 6, some famous YouTubers are featured – along with Will Smith. However, many viewers are less than impressed – with the clip having gathered an enormous 8.5 million dislikes in its short lifespan.

As a result, it’s on track to take Justin Bieber‘s crown for the most disliked video on the site. The Canadian pop star’s clip for his 2010 single ‘Baby’ has 9.7 million dislikes. However, the Biebs’ down thumbs have built up over the course of eight years, whereas Rewind has only been online for less than a week.

Some of the criticism has come from the fact that YouTube’s biggest stars don’t feature. PewDiePie, who holds the record for most subscribers on the service, is absent – along with the likes of Shane Dawson and Logan Paul.

“How can you be so out of touch with your audience?” one viewer posted in the comments section. Another said: “If there’s one thing that will bring people together, it’s hating this video”.

Meanwhile, the top 10 highest earning YouTube stars of 2018 were recently revealed by Forbes. Seven-year-old streamer RyanToys came in first – bagging $22 million in the last year for reviewing toys on his channel.

In other news, PewDiePie made headlines earlier this month after a fan hacked thousands of printers to ask users to subscribe to his channel.

NME Festival blog: Nick Cave shares email to Brian Eno regarding his stance on “cowardly and shameful” Israel boycott

The musician performed two concerts in Tel Aviv last year

Nick Cave has shared an email that he sent Brian Eno last year, in which he discusses his stance on the cultural boycott of Israel.

Last year saw Cave and his band The Bad Seeds perform two shows in Tel Aviv. The musician received criticism from the likes of Roger Waters, Thurston Moore, and Brian Eno – with the artists For Palestine UK members urging him to cancel the shows “while apartheid remains”.

“Stand true to your support for those who opposed Israel’s attacks on Gaza,” an open letter to Cave concluded. “Stand for freedom.”

Now, the musician has offered more details on his views after a fan took to Cave’s  with the question: “What are your thoughts on Brian Eno’s stance on Israel?”

Stating that he had “received a number of messages broadly relating to this issue”, Cave says that Eno had “emailed me in the hope of persuading me to reconsider [the shows]” after they were announced. “Below is my reply, which may go some way to answering your question.”

Within the message to Eno, Cave labels the boycott as “cowardly and shameful”, while defending his decision to perform in Israel as a “principled stand against those who wish to bully, shame and silence musicians”.

Brian Eno

“I do not support the current government in Israel,” Cave says, “yet do not accept that my decision to play in the country is any kind of tacit support for that government’s policies.” The singer adds that he is “aware of the injustices suffered by the Palestinian population”, and hopes “that their suffering is ended via a comprehensive and just solution”.

He then claims that Noam Chomsky “considers the BDS [Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement] as lacking legitimacy and inherently hypocritical”.

After sharing the email from last year, Cave reveals that he still views Eno as his ‘hero’.

“The records he made remain some of the most important and essential recordings I have ever heard,” he states. “So, if there seems to be a thread of anguish that runs through this letter, this is indeed the case. I am writing to my hero.”

Writing about Cave on the artists For Palestine UK website in November 2017, Brian Eno said: “I admire Nick Cave as an artist and I know he has been generous in his support for Palestinian humanitarian causes. I think he has every right to come to his own conclusions about whether or not he supports BDS.

Nick Cave

“However, I think I also have the right to present him with another side to this argument, which I have done – privately, as politely and discreetly as I could. Given the content of his press conference, I think that argument now needs to be restated publicly.”

Earlier this year, Brian Eno, Wolf Alice, The Knife and more called for a boycott of 2019’s Eurovision if it is held in Israel.

NME Festival blog: Here’s how you could be drawn as a character on ‘Bojack Horseman’

Quit horsin’ around and get involved – it’s for a good cause

Bojack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg is offering fans the chance to be drawn as a character on the hit Netflix show.

An Omaze fundraising page has been set up allowing fans to donate to the California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief Fund. One lucky supporter will be selected, winning the top prize of being “drawn into BoJack Horseman as yourself or the animal of your choice”.

Waksberg announced the draw in a video uploaded to Bojack’s official Twitter page.

“To benefit a great cause, we’re gonna fly you out to LA for the day,” he says in the clip. “You’re gonna see how we make the show behind the scenes, you’re gonna meet all the people who put the show together.

“And then at the end of it, we’re gonna draw a picture of you or a pet or the animal of your choice, and we’re gonna draw that as a character on the show.”

Flights and a four-star hotel for the winner and a friend are included in the impressive prize. You can find more details and enter the draw here.

Meanwhile, it was announced that Bojack Horseman had been renewed for a sixth season in October. The fifth chapter in the tale of the washed-up horse was released in September.

The show follows Bojack (Will Arnett), the star of an old ’90s sitcom called Horsin’ Around, who’s “washed up, living in Hollywood, complaining about everything and wearing colourful sweaters.”

The comedy duo toured the UK earlier this year

Flight of the Conchords have released the single ‘Father and Son’, lifted from their Live in London HBO special. Check it out below.

The New Zealand comedy duo – aka Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement – performed the ballad-with-a-twist on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert back in September. Ahead of the TV appearance, UK audiences saw the track being performed during the pair’s UK tour over the summer.

Flight of the Concords

The Hammersmith Apollo date in July was recorded for the HBO special, Flight of the Conchords: Live in London. Following the release of the hour-long special in October, the group have now made the ‘Father and Son’ recording available to fans via streaming platforms.

During the piano-led song, Clement takes on the role of a dad consoling his child. “Son, I know it’s hard to see your daddy cry / It’s been tough on us both since your mamma died,” he sings. McKenzie replies: “You know very well Dad mamma didn’t die / She just hooked up with another guy / That’s where you pick me up on Fridays nights.”

Back in June, Clement and McKenzie spoke about the possibility of a third season. “It’s not like we were tired of each other’s company,” McKenzie said. Clement added: “We were tired of working together.”

The original show premiered in 2007, with the second season arriving in 2009. Later that year, the duo announced that it would not return for a third instalment.

NME Festival blog: Here’s Vampire Weekend covering Bob Dylan’s ‘Jokerman’ at a surprise LA gig

The NYC trio performed to a private crowd

Vampire Weekend performed a surprise set in Los Angeles last night, with the band taking on Bob Dylan‘s 1983 track ‘Jokerman’. Check out footage below.

The New Yorkers, who recently joined the line-up for 2019’s Open’er Festival, performed an intimate gig after frontman Ezra Koenig was interviewed for LA’s GQ Live.

During the show, Koenig continued his recent fascination with ‘Jokerman’ –  having used it as the title for the latest episode of his Apple Music show, Time Crisis.

Vampire Weekend

The December 2 edition saw the frontman interview the creator of the ’90s Jokerman font, Andrew Smith. He had also shared Instagram stories of the font, while asking his followers to send their own photos.

Elsewhere at the private gig, the trio performed ‘Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa’ from their 2008 debut, along with a cover of Honeycombs’ ‘Have I The Right’.

In other news, it was recently revealed that a new song from Ezra Koenig features in the Neo Yokio Christmas special. The musician sings in the track: “I never had a friend like you/I don’t think I’ll ever find another.

Meanwhile, Vampire Weekend are set to release their new record, which has the working title ‘Mitsubishi Macchiato’, in 2019. After the band headlined Chicago’s Lollapalooza in August, Koenig treated fans to previews of some of its tracks, playing the material from his phone at an afterparty.

Describing what they heard, one fan told Reddit: “The sound is a more spacey and empty sounding record, almost reminiscent of [Fleet Foxes’] ‘Crack Up’ in parts, but VERY bright and sunny – a summertime sound with almost a protest song sound vibe to them (no political lyrics I heard or anything like that), and then big dense flashes of instrumentation with heavy percussion and a slick, almost sexy taste of ’70s funk licks. Going to be an interesting record.”

NME Festival blog: Someone hacked over 50,000 printers to ask users to subscribe to YouTuber PewDiePie’s channel

All to raise awareness of online security…

A fan of YouTuber PewDiePie has claimed that he’s responsible for hacking over 50,000 printers to print a message encouraging people to subscribe to the vlogger.

Appearing on Twitter as TheHackerGiraffe, the individual took to Reddit to admit what he’d done. “I hacked 50,000 printers worldwide out of potential 800,000 for PewDiePie and security awareness,” he said on the site’s AMA page.

Yesterday (December 1), the hacker posted a thread on Twitter to offer an explanation.

“I was bored after playing Destiny 2 for a continuous 4 hours, and decided I wanted to hack something,” they said. “So I thought of any vulnerable protocols I could find on shodan [a repository for internet-connected devices]”

Commenting on the lack of security, they said that they were “horrified to see over 800,000 results show up in total”.

“I was baffled, but determined to try and fix this,” they added. “So I picked the first 50,000 printers I found running on port 9100 and downloaded the list off shodan.”

Images of the print-outs had been shared online by those targetted, with one Twitter user asking: “Why are local printers being hacked for this”. Another suspected the YouTuber himself: “I work in IT around Brighton and our Printers are being hacked….is this your propaganda?” See the posts below.

Speaking to The Verge, the hacker has since elaborated on his motives for the bizarre attack. “People underestimate how easy a malicious hacker could have used a vulnerability like this to cause major havoc,” they said.

Saying what cybercriminals would use the tactic for, they explained: “Hackers could have stolen files, installed malware, caused physical damage to the printers and even use the printer as a foothold into the inner network.

“The most horrifying part is: I never considered hacking printers before, the whole learning, downloading and scripting process took no more than 30 minutes.”

Swedish YouTuber PewDiePie currently boasts 73.1 million subscribers. The internet star – whose real name is Felix Kjellberg – is also the highest-earning YouTuber in the world.
