UP THE REPUBLIC
On this day, 14th April 1931, the Spanish Republic was declared. 0161 Festival remember with pride all those who declared and defended the Republics of Spain and Ireland.
Fifteen years earlier, on the 24th April , Easter Monday 1916 the Irish Republic had been declared.
Both offered so much hope and the possibility of a better life for all its people, but both Republics were defeated , in Ireland by the forces of counter-revolution & Imperialism, in Spain by the forces of Fascism.
It was no coincidence that many who had fought valiantly for the Irish Republic rallied to the cause of democracy and equality in Spain.
